Position: St Helena Secondary College. eLearning Leading Teacher

How do you introduce yourself at parties?
I don’t. People just seem to know me. I think it’s because I always forget to take off my teacher name badge. doh!

Do you think that mathematicians deserve the “geek” tag?
Definitely – and they should hang on to it for dear life. It’s coming back in and will be taken over by neo-retro wannabe’s. Fear not, for Geeks shall inherit the Earth.

How do you use maths in your organisation/work?
I use Mathematics to guide and facilitate young people into seeing their world from a different, yet familiar, perspective. Every day I get the wonderful opportunity to help students experience that ‘aha!’ moment.

What has maths done for you lately?
Helped me determine the exact amount of paint required to paint my entire house – leaving only 200ml behind for ‘touch-ups’. Genius.

Do you have a favourite application or theory of maths? And if you do, why is it so?
Hands down, Calculus. Mathematics was just a bunch of rules and numbers until I met the poetry of Leibniz and Newton.[subscribe2]
