Position: Designer and maker of jewellery and sculpture I run my own business trading as Victoria Edgar Jewellery www.victoriaedgarjewellery.
How do you introduce yourself at parties?
As all sorts depending on the party because I love a good party! So for example at an up market event with finely polished baubles I would introduce myself as an artist in metal making exquisite body sculptures; at a barbeque I might be a “Smithy” eg. Blacksmith there are all sorts of mecurious titles that I can bestow upon myself depending on my mood!
Do you think that mathematicians deserve the “geek” tag?
Heck no! I have the deepest respect for those whom delve into the world of numbers. What would we do without their cleverness?! How would the world know how big it is or how heavy a gold ingot was? How would we know how tall we were and how thin our hips had become when dieting?
How do you use maths in your organisation/work?
To count all the outgoings and incomings and because I make such excessively large and expensive pieces usually I am a forlorn sight after every BAS statement because the outgoings sometimes exceed the incomings. Yes it does not take much brilliance to work out which side of the balance sheet a Creative Arts business in Australia will come out – however I seem to hold my own somehow. If this has hit any sympathy buttons within you please feel free to go to my website and order a stunning sterling silver bodipiece – they start at around $4,500.
What has maths done for you lately?
Shown me the horrible truth about exhibiting larger pieces at Galleries as against selling smaller pieces at Designer Markets and has allowed me to follow a complicated formula to quote a piece in gold from sterling silver weight.
Do you have a favourite application? And if you do, why is it so?
Yes I would like multiples of 2 x $2.00 coins X 100 as I have large farm sheds to hold the loot.
