Come on GIRLS!!
New research has shown that there is a concerning gender gap existing between Australian youth when it comes to career aspirations in the mathematical sciences.
As a recent Bachelor of Science graduate I can vouch for the lack of females in my maths and physics classes.
The study, published in Developmental Psychology, compared occupational planning across the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields among senior high school students across different countries. The greatest gender difference was found amoung Australian youth in their desire to have a mathematics related career.
Why is this the case?
Associate Professor Helen Watt from Monash University’s Faculty of Education, who led the study, attributed the gender-gap to the greater and earlier choices Australian adolescents have in their school studies, as opposed to those in other countries.
So, if you are a girl and you are studying mathematics or any of the sciences – like me – help us get the word out: MATHS is COOL, FUN, staggeringly USEFUL and fiscally REWARDING.
Don’t let the next generation of girls dismiss the potentials in mathematically based careers.
